June 5th will be a historical date at La Scala with the opera debut of one of the greatest composers for voices: Frank Schubert. We will hear for the first time in Milan his last Opera Fierrabras with Daniel Harding on the podium, the stage direction of Peter Stein and the best “Lieder” voices. On this occasion, on June 26th, the public talk “Claudio Abbado and the rediscovery of Fierrabras” will pay tribute to a historical interpreter of this opera.
Besides Fierrabras, our opera season counts two more productions before the summer break: from June 18th with the revival of Beethoven’s Fidelio in the monumental staging that opened the 2014-15 Season, now reinterpreted by Myung-Whun Chung; and from June 29th the new production of Bellini’s Il pirata, a milestone of Belcanto Romanticism that featured as its last protagonist here Maria Callas in 1958 and that today will feature the new star Sonya Yoncheva.
On the 8th and 10th June, spotlights on the young students of our Accademia Ballet School for the traditional show supervised by M° Olivieri, while on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th the 90-year-old veteran Herbert Blomstedt will lead the orchestra in Mahler’s Ninth Symphony; a musical testament of infinite profundity.
