The Gallerie d’Italia – Piazza Scala present an extraordinary exhibition on the Eighties : an unprecedented look at Italian painting through a path through emblems and cases, conceived by Luca Massimo Barbero , Associate Curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collections of Intesa Sanpaolo.

Starting from a title that is already a paradox – Painting is back – since painting in Italy has never really faded, more than forty years after those polymorphic and vital Eighties, the exhibition offers a first disenchanted vision of artistic events and protagonists of that decade who provocatively understood painting as a happy and rapacious ability to paint the world of images with a new vitality and who immediately had international visibility and immediate success.

The exhibition proceeds by depths, certainly not exhaustive but revealing, of the transversality of the artists of that decade which, in fact, begins well before the appointed dates and ends well in advance: hence the reason for opening the exhibition with works from the end of the seventies by Sandro Chia , Francesco Clemente , Enzo Cucchi , Nicola De Maria and Mimmo Paladino , or the protagonists of the Transavanguardia officially launched in 1979 by Achille Bonito Oliva from the pages of Flash Art but also with those who, in the same years, were already active on the international pictorial scene such as Franco Angeli , Mario Schifano , Salvo , Aldo Mondino and, in its singularity, Carol Rama .

A varied and apparently contradictory exhibition path, as were those years, which alongside surprising works, since germinal, by Gino De Dominicis or Luigi Ontani , proposes an unexpected Mario Merz and the then new media of the Studio Azzurro video environment . Other personalities, such as Mimmo Germanà or Ernesto Tatafiore , represent those figures present at the first international exhibitions, already as emblematic authors of their own way of experiencing painting.

A decade that sees Milan become, in the collective memory, the symbol of a hedonistic lifestyle but which today is returned to us as an extraordinary system where, in a real laboratory, fashion art, design and entertainment, architecture to politics and finance. In a climate full of energy, numerous galleries operate ready to collect the ferment of those years represented in this exhibition by the names of Valerio Adami , Aldo Spoldi , Mimmo Rotella and Enrico Baj to whom a final room is dedicated with an extraordinary “graffiti on canvas “.

Through the 57 works on display , only some aspects of this creative moment are narrated, that Italian wave that will also concern the younger generations and constellations of new painters, who are not represented here, but which give a signal of the unrepeatability of that moment.
