An Erasmus+ Experience in Milan

An Erasmus+ Experience in Milan

Josue Barone joined the Easy Milano team while he was here with the Erasmus+ program. Read more about his experience studying abroad in Italy.

Italy is one of the countries that most attracts the attention of tourists from all over the world. Amid the ancient history of Rome, the canals of Venice, and the beauty of Florence, Milan can often take a back seat.

Capital of the Lombardy region, Milan is the economic center of Italy. The city stands out in its diversity and as being a hub of the fashion and design world. The historical works of art and architecture, such as the collection of the Pinacoteca di Brera, The Last Supper, the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, are must-see landmarks.

An unforgettable experience

For me, Milan was an incredible city that provided an unforgettable experience.

I came to Milan with the Erasmus+ program, which was sensational! I had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy and work. The Erasmus+ supervisors and staff guided us, planned cultural excursions, and offered support. In my downtime, I explored the city and got a taste of Milanese life and lifestyle.

Erasmus+

Erasmus+ is the EU’s program to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. It offers participants a cultural exchange program through an internship opportunity with a local company.

Josue with Celia, Editor of Easy Milano

I had the opportunity to collaborate with Easy Milano and Milano Style, and I really liked the work. I was part of the content creation teams, which included photography, writing and video editing; things I enjoy doing and hope to make my career. I also liked that most of my work was online. Many see that as a problem, but it was an opportunity to demonstrate my abilities and develop self-discipline and self-management skills.

My mentor for the internship was Celia Abernethy. She was very professional, responsible, and understanding. I got to see the behind-the-scenes of online publishing and marketing. Unlike some of my Erasmus+ companions, I had no conflicts or work-related anxiety, it was a pleasure working with them.

Although it was hard work, I enjoyed the experience and learned lessons I will apply to future work experiences.

First time away from home

The Ersamus+ group

In addition to my work assignment, what I liked the most about Milan was sharing the experience with some friends who were also here on the Erasmus+ program. For many of us, myself included, it was our first experience living away from our homes and families. We discovered the culture, good food and restaurants and enjoyed the Milan nightlife, something very different from my city in Portugal.

I was impressed with the architecture in the city center, the fantastic shopping and the trips to nearby regions such as Lecco, Como, Bergamo and Venice. As an avid football fan, I really enjoyed seeing the San Siro Stadium and visiting the museum.

Visiting San Siro Stadium

Like many large cities, Milan does have crime, there is a lot of graffiti, and it is not always spotless. It is best to be cautious, especially going out at night. Serious crimes are not high in Milan, but pickpocketing and minor crimes are quite common. My advice is to be aware, stay with friends and be careful at night.

I loved getting to know the city of Milan, its history, and culture. I would like to return here on holiday one day, and Milan will remain in my heart as a special place.

Many thanks to Erasmus+, Easy Milano and Milano Style for this memorable experience and work opportunity.
