The position is located in Venice (Veneto) with an intermittent schedule. Consular Agents are hired directly by the Department of State and paid in U.S. Dollars. Consular Agents are subject to FICA tax deductions, earn eligibility for Social Security Retirement benefits and are subject to Federal and State income tax withholdings. Consular Agents may be required to participate in the host country social security system.
The Consular Agent is a fully trained and professional member of the U.S. Mission with responsibility for providing emergency and routine consular services as authorized by 22 USC Section 3943 (Section 303 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980) and the U.S. Department of State regulations in Title 22, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 71.1 and 71.6. The Consular Agent reports to the Consular Chief or the American Citizens Services Chief at the supervisory post. The Consular Agent’s primary responsibility is to protect the interests of and assist U.S. citizens in the Agency’s area of responsibility. The Agent may supervise one or more full- or part-time locally employed Consular Assistants, depending on workload. The Consular Agent is responsible for establishing regular business hours to serve the public in coordination with the supervisory post and CA/EX. The Consular Agent is expected to be on call to handle emergencies and crises affecting U.S. citizens in the Agency’s district whenever needed. The Consular Agent serves as the face of the U.S. Embassy in the Agency’s district, with direct responsibility for forging working relationships with key interlocutors as needed to assist U.S. citizens in distress, including local police and immigration, hospital, prison, morgue, and local government officials as well as relevant private industry professionals. The Consular Agent also plays a key support role in Mission-wide crisis preparedness and serves to provide on-site assistance and guidance whenever a crisis (natural disaster, terrorist incident, etc.) occurs within the Agent’s area of responsibility.
