Shaping Future Global Leaders: An Exclusive Interview with Kathy Crewe-Read, Principal of St. Louis School Milan (Archinto)

Moving to a new country is both an adventure and a challenge—especially when it comes to finding the right school for your children. Expat families in Milan often seek an institution that offers academic excellence, a supportive international community, and strong ties to local culture.

For many, the St. Louis School of Milan is that place. Established in 1996, the school has grown into one of Italy’s most prestigious international schools, offering a seamless education pathway from Early Years (age 2) to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (age 18) across its three campuses: Caviglia, Colonna, and Archinto. With a curriculum rooted in the British educational system and enriched by Italian culture and the globally respected IB Programme, the school prepares students for the world’s top universities.

At the helm of the Archinto campus, which serves high school students (ages 14-18), is Kathy Crewe-Read, an experienced and dynamic leader who believes that education is more than just academics—it’s about shaping independent, confident, and globally-minded individuals. In this exclusive interview, she shares her vision for the school, her experience in Milan, and why St. Louis Archinto is the perfect choice for international families.

1. Kathy, after a successful career in the UK, what inspired you to take the lead at St. Louis Archinto?

I’ve always been drawn to schools that value both academic achievement and personal growth, and St. Louis Archinto embodies that balance beautifully. What really sold me was the students—they are ambitious, engaged, and eager to learn. There is a strong sense of community here, where students challenge themselves while supporting each other.

Milan itself was also a big draw. It’s a city of innovation, creativity, and cultural richness, making it the perfect backdrop for a school that prepares students for an international future. The chance to lead a school that blends British academic traditions with a truly global outlook was an opportunity I couldn’t resist.

2. How would you describe your leadership style?

I’d say hands-on and approachable. You’ll often find me at the school entrance in the mornings, greeting students and parents, or dropping into classrooms for spontaneous conversations. I believe that leadership should be about listening first, then acting.

At St. Louis Archinto, we have a high-performance culture, but it’s built on respect and collaboration. My approach is to set high expectations while ensuring that students feel supported and heard—not just in academics, but in their overall development.

3. St. Louis Archinto has a reputation for academic excellence. How do you maintain such high standards?

It’s a combination of outstanding teaching, a challenging curriculum, and strong student support. Our IB results consistently exceed the global average—in 2024, our students achieved an IB average score of 36, compared to the global average of 30. An impressive 19% of our students scored above 40, putting them in the top tier worldwide.

At IGCSE level, 48% of grades were A/A, and 95% were A-C*. These results speak to the dedication of our students and faculty. But academic success isn’t just about numbers—it’s about cultivating a love of learning and a deep intellectual curiosity.

4. What’s unique about the St. Louis Archinto experience compared to other international schools?

I think it’s the sense of independence we foster in our students. Being located in a historic palazzo in central Milan, our students experience a more grown-up, real-world environment compared to traditional campus schools. They develop a mature, confident approach to learning and life, which really sets them apart when they move on to university.

Unlike large, enclosed campuses, St. Louis Archinto is located in the heart of Milan in Palazzo Archinto, a stunning 17th-century building. This gives students a more independent, real-world experience, preparing them for life beyond school.

With over 50 nationalities represented, our students gain a truly international education. However, more than 60% of our families are Italian, which means that students also experience deep cultural immersion in Milanese and Italian traditions.

We ensure that each student’s journey is personalized. Whether they need extra challenges or additional support, we adjust our teaching to suit individual strengths and aspirations.

5. Many expat families worry about integrating into Italian culture. How does the school help with that?

Although we follow the British curriculum and IB Programme, we strongly embrace Italian culture and language. Many of our students are from international backgrounds, but over 60% of our families are Italian—so learning Italian and engaging with local traditions is a natural part of life here. We also run educational projects with Milanese institutions, helping students connect with the city and its rich cultural heritage.

6. What kind of students thrive at St. Louis Archinto?

Students who are curious, motivated, and open to challenges. We encourage students to think critically, engage with global issues, and take responsibility for their learning.

The IB Programme, in particular, is designed for students who want to develop independence and leadership skills. We find that those who embrace both academic rigor and personal growth thrive in our environment.

7. What does student life look like beyond academics?

Creativity thrives in our art and drama programs, with IB art students exhibiting their work at San Fedele, one of Milan’s premier galleries. Our STEAM and innovation programs include robotics, virtual reality, and coding clubs, encouraging students to explore the latest technologies. An afternoon every week is given over to prioritising Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): a program which encourages students to engage with the wider world through volunteering, social justice projects, and leadership roles. Exciting opportunities for our pupils to work with professional athletes and actors will be in place by September.

8. How do you support students’ well-being?

High academic standards shouldn’t come at the expense of well-being. We have a strong pastoral care system, and I encourage an open-door policy so students always feel heard. We also schedule check-in sessions with form tutors to ensure every student feels supported both academically and personally.

9. How does the school prepare students for university?

We start early! From Year 10, students work with our career counselors to explore potential pathways. We have dedicated counselors for UK, US, and European university admissions, and 90% of our students secure a place at their first-choice university. St. Louis Archinto is a launchpad for success—whether that means Cambridge, Stanford, or Bocconi.

10. How has St. Louis Archinto evolved under your leadership?

We’re constantly innovating! One major step forward is our new theater space, which will enhance our performing arts program. We’re also strengthening our STEAM curriculum, and I’m passionate about further integrating technology and interdisciplinary learning into our classrooms.

11. If you had to sum up St. Louis Archinto in one sentence, what would it be?

“A school where academic excellence, independence, and global citizenship come together—preparing students not just for university, but for life.”

12. What advice would you give to families considering St. Louis Archinto?

Come and visit! The best way to see if a school is right for your family is to experience the atmosphere, meet the students, and talk to the teachers. Our community is welcoming, vibrant, and supportive—a true home away from home for expat families in Milan.
