A Guide to Scooter Sharing in Milan
Getting around Milan has gotten more exciting since the appearance of electric scooters, offering an easy, fun and eco-friendly way to move around and explore the city. We have put together this guide for understanding the scooter sharing system of Milan, covering both kick scooters and electric scooters.
Kick Scooter Sharing
Milan’s micro-mobility service was introduced in 2020 and it reached up to 6000 sharing vehicles all around Milan. This service involves kick scooter sharing, which offers a fun, eco-friendly, and quick way to navigate Milan, even on the narrowest streets of the city.
There are several companies offering kick-scooter sharing systems, which follow the same process.
How to Use Kick-Sharing
The registration process for this type of service takes place via the app of the respective company. You can follow these steps.
1. Download the respective app.
2. Register as a user.
3. Use the map from the app to find the closest vehicle to you. You can reserve the vehicle for up to 30 minutes in advance depending on the company chosen, allowing you enough time to get to it.
4. Scan the QR code on the vehicle to unlock it or start it from the app.
5. Enjoy the ride and follow traffic rules, such as using the bike lane and wearing a helmet.
6. When you get to your destination, park the vehicle in a designated parking area. Make sure that it doesn’t block pedestrian paths.
7. Upload a picture of the vehicle and make sure to end the ride on the app.
Keep in mind that traffic regulations in the city must always be obeyed: the maximum permitted speed is 20 km/h, and in pedestrian areas, the speed must be limited to 6 km/h. Circulation is prohibited in areas with critical issues from a safety point of view, such as on river stone pavements.
Scooter Sharing
The free-floating scooter sharing service has been active in Milan since 2015, with 100% electric vehicles. The service offers a variety of scooters approved for two people, each including two helmets of different sizes positioned in the trunk or saddle of the vehicles.
There are three different operators that offer this service in Milan.
Cityscoot
Cityscoot offers full access to electric scooters available throughout Milan. The process of renting a scooter with Cityscoot is very easy. Download the app and register to be able to locate the closest vehicle to you. You can reserve the scooter for 10 minutes until you get to it. Use the 4-digit code from the app to unlock the scooter, grab your helmet from under the saddle and enjoy the ride! You are free to ride outside the Cityscoot Zone, but keep in mind that you have to get back to it to be able to end the rental. Always park in an authorised public spot, then put your helmet back under the saddle and don’t forget to end the trip on the app or on the scooter.
The price for renting an e-scooter with Cityscoot is €0.38 per minute, but you can find different passes with discounts here.
Download Cityscoot on AppStore or Google Play.
Cooltra
Cooltra offers various scooters available throughout Milan. You can rent a vehicle with Cooltra following the same system as for Cityscoot. After you download the app, you can reserve a scooter for 15 minutes, allowing you enough time to reach it. Start the scooter from the app, then open the trunk by pressing the ‘Open’ button found on the back side of the scooter. Choose one of the two helmets available in two different sizes, then enjoy the ride! When you reach your destination, park the scooter in a designated parking lot, put the helmet back and make sure that the trunk is properly closed. After you take a picture of the vehicle and end the trip on the app, your ride is complete.
The price for renting a scooter with Cooltra is €0.26 per minute, but you can purchase credit packs here.
Download Cooltra on AppStore or Google Play.
Go Sharing
Go Sharing (previously known as Zig Zag) also offers e-scooters in Milan. You can use a Go Sharing scooter through their app using the same process as Cityscoot and Cooltra. If you need to do a pitstop, Go Sharing offers the possibility of choosing a ‘parking mode’ option for only €0.15 per minute. During this option, the vehicle will turn off but it will still be available only to you. When you reach your destination, you can park the scooter only in a designated parking area, which is marked on the map as light green. If you are lucky, you might find a purple area nearby! Make sure to check on the map, as starting or ending a rental in this area gives you a discount on your ride.
The price for renting a Go Sharing scooter is €0.29 per minute, but you can choose a discount package here.
Download Go Sharing on AppStore or Google Play.
Whether you’re rolling on a kick scooter or driving an electric one, these scooters are making navigating Milan more convenient and enjoyable. The streets of Milan are open to being explored, so embrace the simplicity of scooters and have fun riding around the city!
