Learning Italian is about more than mastering grammar. It is also a way to feel at home, make friends and participate in everyday life in Milan. ILS International Language School has welcomed international learners since 1976, offering Italian courses for foreigners in Milan from its central location on Via Disciplini, a short walk from the Duomo. Its individual, intensive and twice-weekly programmes suit newcomers, international students, professionals and long-term residents who want to communicate with greater confidence. Alongside language classes, the school helps students navigate practical aspects of arriving in Italy and connect with people from around the world.
Founded in 1976, ILS marked 50 years of language education in 2026. The school is authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education and ISO 9001 certified. Classes are taught by qualified native-speaking teachers who emphasize conversation, active participation, and practical communication in everyday situations.
ILS is led by Peter Luntz, an American expatriate who has lived in Milan since the late 1990s. His firsthand experience of building a life abroad brings an international perspective to the school. The ILS team provides personalized guidance to help prospective students choose the Italian course that best suits their language level, goals, and schedule.

ILS teaches students from beginner to advanced levels. Its communicative approach develops speaking, listening, reading and writing, with grammar and vocabulary integrated into practical lessons. Students can choose among three principal formats:
One-to-one courses focus on the student’s own objectives, pace and timetable. Lessons may concentrate on everyday conversations, professional Italian, academic preparation or specific projects. Students can choose different levels of intensity, with in-person and online options available throughout the year.
Contact ILS to discuss your learning goals and request a personalised individual-course proposal.
For more concentrated study, the intensive programme brings together 4–10 international learners and runs Monday to Friday, with 20 teaching units of 45 minutes per week. Morning or afternoon sessions are offered. Courses are available in a range of durations, with scheduled entry dates for beginners and regular Monday starts for other levels, subject to assessment and availability.
Group learning creates opportunities for frequent conversation with classmates as well as with the teacher. Ask ILS about the next suitable start date and course format.
Designed for people already living in Milan, these classes accommodate work, university and family commitments. Small groups of 4–6 students meet twice a week for 90 minutes per session. In-person and online options are available with scheduling determined after a level assessment.
For beginners:
11 January · 1 February · 1 March · 5 April · 3 May · 7 June · 5 July · 6 September · 11 October · 2 November
For other levels: every Monday.
ILS also offers longer Italian programmes of six, nine and twelve months for international students planning an extended period in Italy. The school offers visa-related study options and can assist prospective students by explaining course choices and supplying enrolment documentation, including an acceptance letter and certificate of enrolment, after the relevant enrolment steps have been completed.
Students who meet the applicable conditions may be able to apply for an Italian study visa. Visa eligibility and approval are determined by the relevant Italian consulate, not by the school’s accreditation alone. Requirements can differ by consular office and may specify course level, duration and weekly hours. Prospective applicants should confirm these before enrolling; ILS can discuss its programmes and the documents it provides for applications.

The school is located on Via Disciplini 5, close to metro Missori and the Duomo. Inside are eight classrooms, three student lounges, a break area and Wi-Fi, providing room for lessons, individual study and informal conversation before or after class.
The international mix of classmates and ILS-organised social and cultural activities can help new arrivals form friendships and build a network in Milan. Step outside and the city becomes part of the learning experience: cafés, shops, museums and daily encounters provide opportunities to put new language skills into practice.

Finding a place to live can be one of the first challenges for students relocating to Milan. Through its partnership with Spotahome, ILS offers accommodation guidance before arrival, covering shared housing and private apartments. Students who book accommodation through ILS are offered a 20% discount on Spotahome’s platform fees; the promotional code is provided with course-enrolment confirmation.
ILS offers a free initial Italian level test with no obligation to enrol. Contact the school to discuss your goals, course dates, study-visa-related enrolment questions or accommodation needs, and request a personalized recommendation and quote.
