The American School of Milan (ASM), established in 1962 is an independent, non-profit, coeducational day school that offers quality, accredited academic programs for nearly 900 students from preschool through grade 12. ASM is located just outside the city center of Milan. It has a 9-acre campus equipped with state of art classrooms, tennis courts, soccer field, 2 playgrounds, 2 gymnasiums, a 500-seat auditorium, a 10,000 volume library, and state of the art science labs.
ASM has recently inaugurated the Learning Forest, partnering with a local Biotech company and an extraordinary outdoor classroom with a focus on sustainability and outdoor education. ASM offers the full IB diploma in grades 11-12 and is proud to be the oldest, non-profit, IB world school in Milan. ASM’s identity is based on its community of international families and among international schools in Milan, boasts the highest percentage of international students (65%), representing 78 different nationalities from around the world.
ASM is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and is a member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS). We prepare our students for success in higher education and combined with an American ‘ethos’, we encourage students to reach their full potential be it through academics, sports, the arts or innovative passions, and within a caring community that focuses on belonging and inclusion.
The American School of Milan campus houses three main, two-story buildings connected and spread across the 9-acre grounds, offering the space that children and young people need to thrive. There are three distinct stages of education which are offered:
Our curriculum is designed to meet and exceed international standards across all subjects, emphasizing the Common Core Curriculum Standards for math and literacy which are the foundation of learning in the Elementary School.
In addition to this, we embrace Next Generation Science Standards to provide a unique and robust science education program through hands-on lab lessons with dedicated science specialist teachers.
Our students take part in a balanced program, attending weekly specialist classes including art, music, science, Italian language, physical education and library. We cultivate curiosity and critical thinking and strongly believe that the foundation of an education begins in the elementary years programs. Our students in grades 3-5 perform well above average each year on standardized tests in reading, math and language, which is an important measure of academic growth and achievement. What is even more important is that they also emerge as well rounded, kind, curious and courageous children who are ready for the next step in their educational journey.
Our curriculum in the middle school and teaching methods prioritize active, student-centered learning and include varied instructional materials and techniques to accommodate different learning styles.
Our rigorous academic program prepares students for success in high school and university. In addition to a rigorous academic program, our students are able to explore the arts, music, physical education, and world languages (Italian, Spanish and French) for both native and new learners. We also believe that the middle school years are fundamental, and we invest in our social emotional learning through a robust team of counselors to support young people as they mature and navigate the many changes that occur for this age group.
High school spans from grades 9-12. All junior and senior-level courses are taught at the IB level and all 10th grade students are encouraged to take the IB exams at the end of their senior year (grade 12). Students can also choose between obtaining the full IB Diploma, IB Course Certificates, and/or the American High School Diploma. These are their ‘passports’ to universities around the world. Our IB scores are well above the world average each year and most importantly, reflect the potential that each of our students can reach and an inclusive mindset surrounding achievement.
ASM is also part of the North Italian College Board testing facility which means that we are an SAT Reasoning and Subject testing site, as well offering the SSAT and PSAT multiple times per year.
In addition to academic preparation, we believe that students need both support and challenges, building upon their knowledge and building confidence to expand their growth further. Students at ASM can explore and achieve their full potential in all areas: including academics (IB, grades/GPA, testing), as well as develop individual interests through classes, extracurriculars and unique opportunities, such as computer science, Model UN, interest clubs, varsity/junior varsity athletics, community service initiatives, musicals, bands, and pursuit of their interests.
What stands out at ASM is that not just a rigorous academic environment but it also captures a mindset about the type of students that we are growing. Families choose us because they want their children to have an opportunity to reach their fullest potential in all areas and to experience a wider scope of learning which also includes the ‘skills of the future’ which will require a wide range of knowledge (and achievement) as well as other skills to include agility, communication and creativity.
ASM values global citizenship and believes that students can and should make a positive impact on their world and it is our role to guide them in this process, beginning with our values of Respect, Curiosity, Courage, Kindness and Integrity. At ASM we strive for excellence in learning as well as excellence in developing well-rounded and kind human beings.
We offer a wide range of after school activities starting from Kindergarten through Grade 12. In addition to our junior varsity and varsity sports for upper school students, we also offer activities ranging from creative to active, academic and beyond. Students from K-12 can access over 50 different activities in three seasons: fall, winter and spring.
ASM has nearly 900 students across the school divisions (elementary, middle and high school), representing 78 nationalities worldwide. Classroom sizes range from 15-20 students.
The 105 full-time faculty members are one of our greatest investments for our students! The greatest impact on learning stems from passionate, certified and highly trained teachers. Our educators come from various parts of the world, and they are all mother-tongue English speaking, international teachers that embrace the American ‘ethos’ of developing the full potential of our students and inspiring students to reach their highest level of academic potential, and all potential that comes with growth.
ASM’s holistic approach to education ensures students excel academically while developing essential skills for the future, such as adaptability, creativity, and communication. With a strong focus on global citizenship, ASM prepares students to make a positive impact on the world.
