Wilde Without the Boy

The Ballad of Reading Gaol

by Oscar Wilde|With Gerard Logan|Directed by Gareth Armstrong
Between 2015 and 2016 Director Gareth Armstrong and award-winning actor Gerard Logan brought two strikingly touching works by Oscar Wilde to the stage. The first, inspired by the celebrated De Profundis, is entitled Wilde Without the Boy. The second, The Ballad of Reading Gaol, is Wilde’s long letter-poem, a reflection on his time in prison, following his conviction for «gross indecency». He was sentenced to two years’ hard labour and suffered deeply at witnessing the execution of a cellmate.

Rose Reilly, Footballer

by Lorna Martin|With Cristina Strachan|Directed by Maureen Carr
The play tells the incredible true story of a teenager from Ayrshire, Scotland, who refused to play by society’s sexist rules, and who overcame numerous obstacles, including a lifetime ban in her home country. Instead she became a professional footballer in Italy where she won eight league titles, four Italian Cups and was twice crowned a “golden boot” winner. Rose felt particularly honoured to be able play in Milan, where at just eighteen she signed up with the women’s team of the Milan football club.

Ophelia, Herb-woman

Written and directed by Maggie Rose|With Australian actor Elena Pellone|featuring Gilberta Crispino
Herb-women in the Elizabethan era were expert healers with herbal knowledge. Joan Field is a herb-woman by day and in the afternoon she disguises herself as John and acts with Shakespeare’s company, the King’s Men. As John, she can break the rules of the age that forbade women to go on stage. Joan\John successfully plays a string of famous Shakespeare women, like Juliet, Viola and Caterina, but it’s with Ophelia that she discovers something they share: like Joan, Ophelia lives close to nature. Joan entertains the audience with the story of her adventurous life.
