Osteopath Francesca Berti D.O M.Sc (Ost)

Description

What is Osteopathy?

You may think of osteopathy as a possible solution for low back pain, but that’s not all. An osteopathic approach can help improve many other symptoms such as headaches, visceral disorders or pathology-related or referred pain. It can reduce the recovery time from traumatic events or surgery and prevent further onset of symptoms. Being a very gentle and non-invasive approach, it is widely used also in the pediatric population. Part of the treatment includes pain education and enhancement of pain management and body awareness. All these elements contribute not only in alleviating symptoms but also in diminishing stress levels thus improving quality of life.

Osteopathy is mainly a manual therapy. The first visit consists in taking a thorough case history, needed to assess whether osteopathic care is indicated for the specific patient. Questions will regard the current symptoms, general health and well-being, and all the medical history. This will be followed by the osteopathic objective examination that will involve a specific assessment of the painful area and a full assessment of the whole body with its posture, movement, and function including the musculoskeletal elements, fascia, viscera, and cranium. All the findings will then be integrated with the case history data leading to an osteopathic diagnosis and treatment plan. Osteopathy is considered to be a holistic practice, considering not only body but also mind and spirit as elements of integration. Each patient is different and each treatment plan will therefore be different even if the complaint is the same. The main aim of osteopathy is to stimulate and enhance the body’s inherent ability to self-regulate and self-heal.

Francesca is well aware of the importance of words and communication, especially when talking about health. She also knows the difficulties expats have to face to bridge the language gap they often come across. She will offer you a space where listening and understanding comes first.

Osteopathy is currently being regulated in Italy and is now recognized as a healthcare profession with its main field being prevention. The final steps to reach complete regulation should take place shortly.

Who is Francesca?

Francesca was born in Milan but moved to London shortly after and therefore grew up learning English as her first language. She came back to Milan in her teenage years and never stopped nurturing the knowledge of the language even when immersed in a completely Italian environment. She graduated as an osteopath at Instituto Superiore di Osteopatia (ISO) based in Milan, an institute that has always put value in high-quality education meeting UK guidelines and training curriculum to ensure high standards in a country where the profession was yet to be recognized and regulated. She obtained her BSc in 2008 released by Wales University and as an undergraduate started taking advantage of her bilingualism by translating international lecturers from English to Italian in the osteopathic and biomedical fields.

In the following years, she started her private practice in Milan alongside an academic career at ISO where she worked as a clinical tutor and lecturer for fourth-year students up to 2020. She graduated in 2019 in the MSc program in Osteopathy released by Bucks University after completing two Post Graduate Certificates provided by the University College of Osteopathy (UCO, London), one in Academic and Clinical Education and one in Peadiatric Practice. She still works as a translator for continuing professional development courses for different institutes such as the Advanced Osteopathy Institute and for the biggest regulatory body in Italy called Registro degli Osteopati d’Italia (ROI).
