Opening of Consulate General of Ireland in Milan

Opening of Consulate General of Ireland in Milan

Ireland’s first Consulate General in Milan has opened, marking a significant deepening of Ireland’s engagement with Italy. The opening comes as part of the Global Ireland initiative to expand Ireland’s presence overseas, and is a testament to the importance Ireland attaches to our close relationship with Italy.

This new Mission will represent Ireland across the northern regions of Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Trentino-Alto Adige, Valle d’Aosta and Veneto.

Italy and Ireland enjoy exceptionally warm bilateral relations. We are partners in the EU and enjoy strong economic, political and cultural ties. The Consulate General joins the existing Team Ireland offices of Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia and Tourism Ireland, already present in Milan, to represent Irish interests in the north of Italy and bring a new strength and depth to Ireland’s relationship with these regions.

In addition to building on the economic and cultural work carried out by Ireland’s Embassy in Rome, the new Consulate General will support Irish citizens living and travelling in the north of Italy.

Ireland’s Ambassador to Italy, Patricia O’Brien said “The Government’s decision to open a Consulate General in Milan is testament to the importance that Ireland places on its relationship with Italy. The Consulate’s opening brings much opportunity for deeper and stronger engagement with the North of Italy. This builds on the dedication and work of Antonia Marsaglia, who has been a wonderful Honorary Consul for Ireland in Milan for over thirty years. I warmly welcome Consul General Maria Sheehy and Deputy Consul General Frank Bradley as the newest members of Team Ireland in Italy.”

The new mission will be led by Consul General Maria Sheehy, who said, “I am excited to start work as Ireland’s first Consul General in the North of Italy. Milan is at the centre of economic activity in Italy , and is home to dynamic fashion, technological, food and industrial sectors. It also a hub for the vibrant Irish community in northern Italy. I look forward to working with the city and regional authorities to deepen and strengthen our links in Milan and the wider Northern regions.”

While the Consulate-General in Milan is in its initial set-up phase, those with consular services, visa or passport queries should continue to first contact the Embassy of Ireland in Rome. Further updates on the Consulate-General’s public functions will issue on its website and via social media.
