Milan will celebrate St Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint, with an evening of food, whisky, live music and Scottish Country Dancing on Saturday, 28 November at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Donato Milanese.

Organised by the Milan Scottish Country Dancers, St Andrew’s Night has been held at the hotel for around 30 years. One of the main reasons is practical: the venue offers the all-important wooden floor needed for Scottish Country Dancing, together with a restaurant and hotel accommodation all under one roof.

The evening begins at 7.15pm, when guests will be welcomed by the sound of the bagpipes, played by Pier Zuin. After registration, there will be time for an aperitif and a chance to meet old and new friends before dinner begins at 8.00pm.

Dinner will be served as a four-course buffet, with a selection of starters, risotto and pasta, followed by a choice of fish or meat and a selection of desserts. Vegetarian and gluten-free options will also be available. Red and white wine are included throughout dinner, followed by coffee and, for those who wish, a traditional dram of whisky.

After dinner comes the raffle, with a selection of prizes, before the dancing begins at 9.30pm.

Join the dancing

Scottish Country Dancing is at the heart of the evening, with three hours of dancing to live music.

You do not need to be an experienced dancer to take part. While members of the Milan Scottish Country Dancers are currently preparing for the evening through a dedicated course, several of the easier dances will be walked through and called so that newcomers can join in too.

Guests are encouraged to bring comfortable flat shoes for dancing.

St Andrew’s Night takes place close to St Andrew’s Day on 30 November, Scotland’s national day. St Andrew has been Scotland’s patron saint for centuries, while the white diagonal cross associated with him became the Saltire, Scotland’s national flag.

For those interested in discovering more about the history and legends surrounding St Andrew, Easy Milano’s existing feature, The Story of Saint Andrew, explores his life, the origins of the Saltire and the extraordinary journey of his relics across Europe.
