Inauguration of the Canadian Consulate in Milan

Inauguration of the Canadian Consulate in Milan

New headquarters for the Canadian Consulate in Milan were inaugurated on 10 October, at Via Verziere 11, in the presence of the Canadian Ambassador of Italy, Elissa Golberg, and the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala.

This highlights the importance that Canada recognises in Milan, Lombardy, Northern Italy and all of Italy, crowning the celebrations of 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“Canada is determined to make strategic contributions and be present where it matters the most” emphasized Ambassador Golberg. She added “Milan is one of the main global hubs for trade, a city known for its innovation and creativity. For this reason, it is appropriate for Canada to strengthen its presence here, so that the new Consulate is a center of dialogue and commitment, a concrete sign of Canada’s desire to promote, in the years to come, even greater collaboration with the Italians in the field political, socioeconomic, cultural, academic, scientific and technological, public security, defense and matters relating to sustainable development”.

Mayor Sala has also mentioned that he was “pleased to inaugurate the new Canadian Consulate in Milan, a concrete symbol of the renewed cooperation between the city of Milan and Canada, a country with which we have always collaborated on important common issues, such as climate change and the protection of biodiversity, the circular economy and the exchange of inclusive experiences at urban level”. He recalled that Milan “has a privileged relationship with Toronto. This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the twinning. and we have assiduous exchanges with Montréal. I thank Ambassador Golberg for her always fruitful collaboration and welcome the new Consul Thérien”.

Italy is Canada’s second trading partner in the European Union and the eighth on a global scale, last year bilateral trade between the Northern Italy area and Canada was 5.3 billion euros. Scientific and technological cooperation was also intense. The universities of the city of Milan alone boast 15% of the academic agreements between Canada and Italy (37 out of 242). 9 of the 50 winners of the Canada-Italy Innovation Award, an initiative established by the Canadian Embassy in 2013, also live in Milan.

The new offices, designed by the Canadian branch of an Italian company, Lead Design-Builder, have obtained the prestigious LEED ID+C certification at the Gold (LEED ID+C = LEED Interior Design + Construction). This means a 76% reduction in internal water use, a 43% improvement in energy performance and the use of materials compatible with IAQ (Indoor Air Quality). This commitment to environmental sustainability is emblematic of Canada’s efforts to combat climate change and its role as a world leader in the development of clean technologies.
