The Best City To Study Photography In Italy: Milan

The Best City To Study Photography In Italy: Milan

Do you want to study photography in Italy but don’t know which city offers the best photography courses?

Milan, Rome, Turin and Venice all have unique qualities, but when it comes to photography, we believe that Milan surpasses them all.

Rome is excellent if you are interested in cinema and filmmaking. The industrial capital of Turin is good for photographers with a technical eye. Photographers who want to delve deep into understanding art history may choose Venice or Florence.

However, Milan offers a mix of all these things and is an excellent location to study and establish a career in photography.

The capital of “made in Italy” is Milan and one of the wealthiest and most populous cities in Europe. The city is a major fashion and design hub and is home to some of the world’s most prestigious art and design schools. It is also an important center for photography, with a number of respected photographers and galleries based in the city.

Milan has a long history of art and culture, and its museums and galleries are some of the best in the world. The city is also home to a number of excellent photography schools, making it the perfect place to study photography.

Types of photography Schools

In Italy, there are two types of schools: a Photography Academy, which is much like a university, where you can graduate with a degree in photography or Vocational Photography Courses.

Academies require students to provide a high school diploma to enroll, and at the end of the course, you earn a degree. On the other hand, there are no national requirements for vocational schools, and every school decides on independent enrollment requirements. At the end of a vocational course, you get a certification of attendance.

Universities depend on MIIUR (the Italian Ministry of Education) and they must include more theoretical courses compared to vocational schools. Vocational schools usually focus more on practice both in the studio and on location.

Some of the best photography institutes in Italy include:

– The Istituto Italiano di Fotografia (IIF), Milan

-The Scuola Superiore di Fotografia e Comunicazione Integrata (SSFCI), Rome

-The Centro Italiano per la Fotografia d’Autore (CIFA), Turin

Each one offers a unique approach to photography education, so be sure to research each one carefully to find the right fit for you.

Becoming a professional photographer

There is no such thing as a register or union of professional photographers, not in Italy nor abroad. Therefore, you don’t need a degree or certificate to work as a photographer to be recognized as such.

What you need to work as a photographer is practical and technical knowledge and skills, an all-around professional portfolio and great connections.

When choosing your new school, it’s important to also take into account the city where you will live and study.  If your school is well connected to agencies and companies, it will be easier for you to find work in the industry.

Studying Photography in Milan

Milan is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy and for good reason. The city is the headquarters for most fashion and design houses. The architecture of Milan with its mix of ancient and modern is another draw as well. But beyond its superficial charms, Milan is also an excellent place to study photography.

In Milan, you will find the most important photo studios and agencies, TV studios and magazine and book publishing houses as well as a wide range of businesses and industries.

If you are interested in cinematography, then the best city to choose is Rome. For any other photography genre, Milan can offer you more opportunities than any other Italian city.

IIF, a Top Photography School in Milan
